Description of the place : Porretta Terme is a characteristic municipality bordered by the Reno river at its confluence with the Rio Maggiore and surrounded by the green hills of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. Famous for its thermal waters, it offers numerous attractions to satisfy the tastes of every type of tourist.
In fact, the thermal baths have been appreciated since ancient times by the Etruscans and Romans, Machiavelli stayed in Porretta at the time of the Mandragola, and nobles, intellectuals, artists and guests from all the Italian states at the end of the 19th century used to meet in Porretta.
There is also a direct source testifying to the existence of thermal springs at least since Roman times: the famous mask depicting the face of a lion, today the symbol of the Terme di Porretta. This marble effigy recovered in 1888 along the bed of the Rio Maggiore river is dated back to the first century of our era.The Natural Park of the Lakes of Suviana and Brasimone (also known as the "Park of the Lakes"), extends in the central sector of the Bolognese Upper Apennines, on the border with Tuscany, and includes part of the mountain basins of the Limentra di Treppio and Brasimone streams. The territory is characterised by the presence of three basins of artificial origin: Suviana, Brasimone and Santa Maria.
Porretta's geographic position makes it an ideal place for those who want to visit the Tuscan beauties of Pistoia and Montecatini, or those who want to see Bologna and enjoy its entertainments. The Bologna-Pistoia railway line is also worth mentioning, with the Porretta station exactly halfway along the route, which is recommended both to reach the two cities without taking the car and to enjoy the natural beauties that the Apennines reserve during the trip.
